This month brings a new trail marker in my author journey. As writers, we need to set goals to achieve on our way, or we may feel like we are going nowhere. It takes time and dedication, and maybe a little luck, to make it in this field. Learning to celebrate the small triumphs keeps writers going and hopeful.

My Trail Marker: Searching Made Easy

As this new year has rolled in, I am celebrating that I have reached Google status (at least that’s what I’m calling it). You can now type my name in the Google search bar, and the homepage of my website shows up on the first page of results.

You may be asking: how did you gain this status? You’re right to wonder. I don’t have any books out or many visitors to my website. The reason is simple.

I’m consistent.

I have posted on my website weekly, and that is enough to win the attention of the Google algorithms. They are programmed to put active, and therefore relevant, websites near the top of the result list. Since not many people have websites with my name, I was able to move up on Google’s list of recommendations.

While not many people will be searching my name right now, it will make spreading the word of my website easier. Before, I had to tell people about the website and instruct them to search the URL. Most forgot and just ran a search for my name, and then they came back to me (well, the most dedicated ones did) saying they couldn’t find my website. Now, when I want to spread the news of my website, they just have to type my name in Google and scroll down. This will hopefully allow me to not lose possible readers because of inconvenience.

A Writer’s Lesson

I am half writing about this to share a milestone in my journey, but I’m also writing to share an important lesson every writer should learn. Consistency and determination is how an author makes a name. When we finally get a book published, we should celebrate! We proved that we can write a good book. Next, we have do it again.

To move to a stable author status, we must produce quality work consistently. It may not seem like anyone is paying attention to what we are putting out into the world, but we have to keep going. Then one day, when we think nothing will come of it and should just give up, we wake up and realize something has happened.

An algorithm is promoting our websites. An agent believes in our stories. An audience demands our books.

Our consistency and determination proved that we were worthy to be noticed.

Final Thoughts

For now though, we write because if we didn’t our passion for written words would explode inside us. So join me and write. Even if no one is reading it. One day, they will, and you’ll be glad you were consistent and determined.

Thanks for reading!
